6. Glass statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The “Reflecting Virgin” is a striking glass statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, located in the Chapel of the Annunciation.

Created in 1993 by Witney-born artist Andrew Logan, the sculpture is crafted from broken mirrored glass, with Mary’s robe radiating an iridescent blue. This colour choice follows the centuries-old tradition of representing Mary in blue, a colour once created by grinding the rare and costly stone lapis lazuli, imported along the Silk Road and reserved for only the most sacred depictions.

Andrew Logan, a Witney-born artist, is celebrated for his ground breaking work with reflective materials.

The “Reflecting Virgin” is a beautiful fusion of Logan’s modern, reflective style with the timeless reverence associated with Mary, offering a space for reflection and admiration.

Born in 1945 and trained at the Oxford School of Architecture, Andrew Logan, has his own museum in Berriew, mid-Wales.
