Words of Hope

It is always good to call to mind the hope we have in God through Jesus, especially during these troubled times.  On this page you will find various words from scripture along with some prayers, blessings and other words of encouragement.  We hope that they will help you to find hope and peace and to remember that God's love for you is steadfast and beyond measure.

Words From Scripture

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd;
therefore can I lack nothing.
You make me lie down in green pastures
and lead me beside still waters.
You shall refresh my soul
and guide me in the paths of righteousness for your name's sake.
Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You spread a table before me
in the presence of those who trouble me;
you have anointed my head with oil
and my cup shall be full.
Surely goodness and loving mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of God for ever.

Psalm 46. 1-3, 7

God is our refuge and strength.
A very present help in trouble;
therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved,
and though the mountains tremble in the heart of the sea;
though the waters rage and swell,
and though the mountains quake at the towering seas.
The God of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

Psalm 62.1-2, 5, 7

On God alone my soul in stillness waits;
from God comes my salvation.
God alone is my rock and my salvation,
my stronghold, so that I shall never be shaken.
Wait on God alone in stillness, O my soul;
for in God is my hope.
In God is my strength and my glory;
God is my song rock; in God is my refuge.

Psalm 91.1-6, 11

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
and abides under the shadow of the Almighty;
shall say to God, 'My refuge and my stronghold,
my God, in whom I trust.'
For God shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence.
God shall cover you with God's wings
and you shall be safe under God's feathers;
God's faithfulness shall be your shield and buckler.
You shall not be afraid of any terror by night,
nor of the arrow that flies by day;
of the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
nor of the sickness that destroys at noonday.
For God shall give angels charge over you,
to keep you in all your ways.

Isaiah 40.31

But those who wait on God shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah 43.1-2, 4

Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.  When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.  For I am your God, the Hoy One of Israel, your Saviour.  You are precious in my sight, and honoured, and I love you.

Jeremiah 29.11

For surely I know the plans I have for you, says our God, plans for your welfare and not for hard, to give you a future with hope.

Matthew 28.20b

[Jesus said]  And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

John 14.27

[Jesus said]. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.  I do not give to you as the world gives.  Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.

Romans 15.13

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

1 Peter 1.3-5

Blessed be the God of our Lord Jesus Christ! Who has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Songs & Chants

Anthem of Praise for Lent

Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

'Jesus le Christ', a chant from the Taize Community

Lord Jesus Christ, your light shines within us.  Let not my doubts nor my darkness speak to me.  Lord Jesus Christ, your light shines within us.  Let my heart always welcome your love.

Prayers & Blessings

A Traditional Gaelic Blessing

May the road rise up to meet you.  May the wind be always at your back.  May the sun shine warm upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of God's hand.

After St Augustine of Hippo, 354-430, Common Worship: Compline

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who wake, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep.  Tend the sick, give rest to the weary, sustain the dying, calm the suffering, and pity the distressed; all for your love's sake, O Christ our Redeemer.

From Night Prayer in Celebrating Common Prayer

Be present, O merciful God, and protect us through the silent hours of this night, so that we who are wearied by the changes and chances of this fleeting world, may rest upon your eternal changelessness; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

From Night Prayer, in Celebrating Common Prayer

Visit this place, O God, we pray, and drive from it all the snares of the enemy; may your holy angels dwell with us and guard us in peace, and may your blessing be always upon us; through Jesus Christ.

Words of Comfort

Words of Brother Roger of the Taize Community in France

God of consolation, you burden yourself with our burdens, so that we can move forward at every moment, from anxiety to trust, from shadows toward light.
Jesus, hope of our hearts, you dwell in us, and by your Gospel you tell each one of us: 'Fear not, I am with you.'
Christ Jesus, Saviour of every life, you suffer with all who experience hardships and you always welcome any who entrust to you their own burdens.

Our stewardship enables us to fulfil God's call and share in God's mission

The Church is the new creation, it is life and joy, it is the sacramental fellowship in which we share the ultimate purpose of God, made real for us now in our hearing the Word and sharing the Sacrament.
