The Choir at St Mary’s
Music is integral to worship at St Mary’s, deeply rooted in the rich musical heritage of the Anglican Church. Our robed choir, under the expert direction of Organist and Choir Master Dr Francis Rumsey, enhances the 10:45 Sung Parish Eucharist with its exceptional performances.
Dr Rumsey brings extraordinary expertise to our recently acquired Regent Classic organ, enriching worship services and captivating audiences through occasional recitals and musical events.
The voluntary, four-part choir rehearses weekly at 9:45 am on Sundays, except in August, when members take a well-deserved break. Beyond regular services, the choir participates in significant events throughout the year, including singing from the gallopers at Witney Feast, leading the congregation in hymns at the town’s war memorial on Remembrance Sunday, and performing at the carol service and Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. The choir is also available for hire for weddings and funerals held at St Mary’s, arrangements for which can be made through the Parish Office. Those interested in joining the choir are invited to speak with Dr Rumsey.
Additionally, the St Mary’s Singers, an ad hoc group of local vocalists, convenes approximately three times annually to sing Choral Evensong, often in celebration of major festivals at St Mary’s. Prospective singers are expected to prepare the music in advance, possess strong sight-reading skills, and be able to perform with just one rehearsal. For further details, please contact Dr Rumsey.
